Early Byzantine Basilica of Vizari

ABOUT

Located one kilometre to the east of the village of Vizari in Amari, an area that was once the site of a remarkable city flourishing during the final years of the Roman era, a significant early Byzantine Basilica dating back to the 3rd century AD has been unearthed through excavations.

This basilica stands out as one of the best-preserved in Crete. It features a three-aisled structure with a narthex on the west side, and its side aisles culminate in arches.

The sanctuary was demarcated from the central aisle by a low partition featuring small columns. Several of its architectural elements were repurposed from an earlier, pre-Christian church.

The Basilica of Vizari held significant religious importance during the early Christian centuries and served as the seat of the diocese of Syvritos.

According to tradition, the basilica was dedicated to the Virgin Mary, Saints Vlasios, and Theodoros. Unfortunately, it was destroyed in the early 9th century by the Saracens.
