ABOUT

Lato was one of the most significant city-states of the Dorians in Crete, likely existing even before the ‘descent of the Dorians’.

As noted by archaeologist Vili Apostolakou on the website of the Ministry of Culture, Lato is constructed on the col of two hills, strategically positioned for natural fortification. This location not only oversees the passage from central to eastern Crete but also offers protection from potential raids and allows for the supervision of a substantial area of Mirabello Bay.

The city derived its name from Leto (Doric form of Lato), the mother of Apollo and Artemis. However, the primary goddess of the city was Eileithyia, also depicted on coins.

From Lato came Nearchos, the admiral of Alexander the Great.
