The Enchanting Agios Titos: A Heraklion Gem
ABOUT
The Church of Agios Titos is closely intertwined with the history of Heraklion.
Agios Titos Square serves as a gathering spot for people of all age groups. It's surrounded by a variety of shops and restaurants.
History
After the recovery of Crete by Nikiforos Fokas, the diocesan seat moved from Gortyn to Candia (now Heraklion), establishing it as the island's new capital, as per the records of the Heraklion Municipality.
The city's grandest and most significant new metropolitan church now houses a collection of sacred relics, including the skull relic of Apostle Titus and the miraculous icon of Mesopantitissa.
Following the population exchange, the Church of Crete undertook the necessary repairs to the church, and in 1925, it was rededicated to Apostle Titus. Located to the east of the church was the residence of the Archdiocese.
