Sakthouria: The Village’s History Dates Back to the Minoan Era
ABOUT
A picturesque village in the municipality of Agios Vasilios with significant history.
In the areas of Agios Ioannis and Agios Markos, remains of Minoan settlements have been excavated, dating from the Middle Minoan II to the Late Minoan IB period.
During the German Occupation, the residents of Sakthouria initially helped hide and later assisted in evacuating Allied troops from Crete. At the port of Agios Pavlos, submarines docked to both supply the resistance with weapons and smuggle Allied forces off the island. For this activity, the Germans burned the village to the ground on May 4, 1944, imprisoning all men over the age of 15. Fifteen of them were ultimately executed.
