Metropolitan Church of St Minas (Agios Minas)
ABOUT
The new Metropolitan Church of St. Minas stands adjacent to the small Church of Agios Minas and Ypapanti (Candlemas). This church is devoted to St Minas, the patron saint of Kastrians, the former name of the city's inhabitants.
Construction work began in 1862 and was completed in 1895.
The new Metropolitan Church is, to this day, one of the most impressive and imposing churches in Greece. The church building is cruciform; it has a cross-shape floor plan, with a long central nave and wings that intersect it at right angles, forming the shape of a cross. It is marked by a dome, combines features of a three-aisled basilica, and has two bell towers, one in the northeast and one in the southeast.
The right aisle is dedicated to St Titus and the left to the Ten Martyrs of Crete.
