Embaros: Dittany and Historical Heritage
ABOUT
The village is not just known for its olive oil; its renowned specialty is dittany.
Embaros boasts 18 churches within the village and its surroundings. Among its amenities, the village features a post office, police station, kindergarten, primary school, regional clinic, and the central church of Agios Georgios, adorned with well-preserved frescoes by the painter Stamatis Fokas. Other noteworthy churches include Agios Georgios, Michael Archangel Falkianos, Agioi Anargyri, the two-aisled Holy Cross, Agios Nikitas, the Panagia Church with crowns dating back to the 16th century on the lintel, the Holy Trinity, and the newer Church of Agia Irini.
Embaros held the distinction of being the largest village in Pediada during the Venetian occupation.
In the early 17th century, Embaros served as a fief under the ownership of the poet Fortunato Marcantonio Foscolo, who bestowed it as a dowry upon his daughter, Diana, in 1635.
