Heraklion's Venetian Harbor
ABOUT
Anyone visiting Heraklion must take a stroll through the city's Venetian harbor. Here, you can marvel at Koules, the imposing sea fortress that once protected the Great Castle.
According to the Municipality of Heraklion, the harbor took its final form during the 16th and 17th centuries. To the south and east, the Venetians built the arsenals and shipyards, where they constructed and outfitted their warships and merchant vessels. The fortification of the harbor led to the creation of two gates, the Molos Gate and the Neoria Gate, which allowed communication with the city. Unfortunately, these gates have not survived to the present day.
