Gouverneto Monastery
ABOUT
The Gouverneto Monastery, also known as the Monastery of the Lady of the Angels, stands on a small plateau in Cape Akrotiri, Chania. Established between 1537 and 1548, it is one of the oldest monasteries in Crete.
It was damaged during Ottoman times and burnt during the revolution of 1821, but continued to be inhabited.
The monastery endured damage in Ottoman times and suffered a devastating fire during the 1821 revolution. Despite these challenges, it persisted as a place of habitation.
The monastery is designed with a fortress-like layout, featuring a rectangular structure and corner towers.
The main church of the monastery is a three-apsed church with a dome and diakonikon. The church's facade is influenced by Mannerism and showcases relief images of mythical creatures adorning its exterior.
The monastery's vicinity features a small museum that houses ecclesiastical art and other valuable relics.

The tip of Local!
A beautiful monastery, but it is quite strict about dress code and proper conduct. Make sure to avoid wearing shorts and sleeveless tops.
