Gergeri: The Envy of Dionysus

ABOUT

A prominent location in the village of Gergeri is the Fountana spring, which supplied ancient Gortys with water. Sections of the Roman aqueduct have been preserved, and throughout the Venetian occupation, Gergeri boasted numerous watermills.

In the area, you'll find the largest oak forest in Crete, the forest of Rouvas, which should definitely be visited by anyone in the vicinity.

One can also explore the 'mitata' (shepherd’s huts) of Gergeri breeders.

On 3rd November, the barrels with the new wine are opened for the first time, and the patron saint, Agios Georgios Methystis, is celebrated. Additionally, in the village, there are festivals celebrating Ypapanti (2nd February) and Prophet Elias (20th July).

A special celebration for the area is the 'Apokrigiomata in Gergeri’, held every Clean Monday, attracting people from all over Crete.
