Gavalochori Historical and Folklore Museum: A Journey Through Cretan Heritage

ABOUT

Discover a cultural gem in the heart of Apokoronas, just 26 kilometres from Chania – the Gavalochori Historical and Folklore Museum, a renowned destination for visitors from both Greece and abroad.

Established in September 1993, the museum is located within a building that exemplifies the region's traditional architecture.

The museum is accommodated within a two-level building. The ground floor features an internal courtyard and an arched house with additional spaces, while the first floor comprises an 'oda' (traditional Cretan room). Some sections of the building date back to the Venetian era, while the first floor was added during the Turkish occupation.

The museum features seven rooms, each dedicated to distinct sections: 'Kamarospito' (house characterised by a large central arch in traditional architecture), Silk, Pottery, 'Kopaneli' (a type of handcrafted lace), Stonemasons, Church, and Wood Carving.

  • Opening Times: 09:00-16:00
