Eleftherias Square
ABOUT
Eleftherias Square serves as the central square of Heraklion and is home to several prominent landmarks, including the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion, the Region of Crete building, and the Gate of Agios Georgios.
The location where Eleftherias Square stands today served as a training ground for the Venetian mercenary army during the Venetian occupation. In the 16th century AD, the Gate of Agios Georgios was constructed, leading to the renaming of the square as Agios Georgios Square.
In 1628, while constructing the Morosini fountain for the water supply of Heraklion, a water bridge with three arches was erected. This bridge supported a water pipe leading to the fountain. It was from this water bridge that the area came to be known as Tris Kamares, even though the Turks later demolished these structures in the 19th century AD.
