Athánatoi: A Village High Up There
ABOUT
Athánatoi is a charming, small, semi-mountainous village where nature lovers can enjoy the serenity of the countryside while remaining just a short distance from the city of Heraklion.
The village’s name comes from the agave plant, known as "Athánatos" in Greek, which symbolizes immortality in Crete.
Today, the old municipal school near the Church of Saint John serves as the center for the village’s cultural association. Events such as the Feast of Saint John and the Moustalevria Festival in the summer attract many visitors to the village.
Athánatoi boasts a lovely traditional tavern and several Airbnb accommodations, offering a variety of interesting hiking trails for outdoor enthusiasts. The area is also ideal for cycling and horseback riding. With its mild climate, unobstructed views, beautiful surroundings, friendly locals, and easy access to Heraklion via the Heraklion-Moires National Road, Athánatoi is an exceptional destination for a getaway.
