Agios Georgios Monastery in Karydi
ABOUT
The Monastery of Agios Georgios, situated in Karydi Apokoronas, is located approximately 2 kilometres to the east of Vamos. After being abandoned for many years, the monastery underwent restoration in 1996 and is now operational once again. It holds a unique position within the province of Apokoronas, serving as the most captivating example of folk architecture in the Chania prefecture. One of the monastery's distinctive features is its large olive press, characterised by twelve arches, although the roof of the press has collapsed over time. Inside the monastery, there are four olive mills, with only the bases remaining. Unfortunately, the millstones have been removed.
