Nature
Crete’s landscape is full of unusual geological formations. Some of these places might have scientific explanations, but locals prefer to surround them with legends, adding a magical aura. In the Psiloritis Geopark, you’ll find many unique spots worth visiting and capturing with your camera. Here are three of the most intriguing:
“Granny’s Pies”
In the village of Prinias, you’ll come across strange, layered rock formations known as the “Granny’s Pies.” Locals also call them “Granny’s Bread” and have crafted a charming legend to explain their origin. These rock “pies” appear to be stacked, as though they were left behind by a mischievous spirit from another world.
“Nature’s Sculptures”
In Crete, nature often takes on the role of an artist. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the village of Honos. Here, you’ll find striking formations shaped by surface karst erosion, resulting in sculptures that look as if they’ve been chiseled by hand. Wander through these “sculptures,” and you might feel like you’re in an open-air art gallery created by nature itself.
Outdoor Fold Museum
As you make your way toward Vosakos Monastery, you’ll encounter an outdoor geological museum showcasing the fascinating rock folds of the area. This open-air marvel is considered to be of global significance and offers an extraordinary look at the earth’s geological past. The intricate patterns and folds will leave you mesmerized, making this a must-see for anyone with a love of natural wonders.
Crete’s geological curiosities are unlike anything you’ll find elsewhere, blending science with myth in landscapes that feel both ancient and magical.
