Culture

The history of Crete, unfortunately, bears the scars of conflict and bloodshed.

The island's inhabitants have endured deprivation, war, and occupation throughout history. Despite these challenges, their courage remains unparalleled, earning praise from poets for their unwavering bravery.

Throughout Crete, there are museums commemorating wartime experiences and dedicated to the struggles for liberation.

Argyrakeio War Ethnological Museum, Episkopi, Heraklion

Set in a traditional stone building in the village of Episkopi, this museum is a treasure trove for World War II enthusiasts. It holds more than 2,000 authentic items — from uniforms and weapons to personal belongings of soldiers. The collection tells a vivid story, but it's the atmosphere that really hits home: this is a place built out of respect for memory and identity, reflecting how deeply the people of Crete care about their past.

Askifou War Museum, Chania Region

Tucked away in the mountainous village of Askifou, this museum is a labour of love — the result of one local family's determination to preserve the island’s war history. It’s one of the richest private collections of its kind in Greece. You'll find everything from military vehicles and uniforms to ammunition and rare photographs. Every corner of the museum speaks to the brutality of war and the incredible devotion of those who lived through it.

Therisos National Resistance Museum, Chania

Housed in the historic building that served as the headquarters of the 1905 Therisos revolt, this museum goes beyond World War II. It shines a light on the broader spirit of resistance that defines the Cretan identity. With original documents, photographs and personal items from the leaders of the revolutionary movement, the museum paints a powerful portrait of Crete’s role in resisting occupation — from the early 20th century to the wartime years.
