Cave of Eileithyia, the Goddess of Childbirth

ABOUT

The cave of Eileithyia is one of the most well-known and mysterious caves of Crete.

Although Eileithyia held a secondary position in Greek mythology, she was revered by the Minoans many centuries before the emergence of the Twelve Olympian gods. As one of the oldest deities known by name, she held a vital role as the goddess of childbirth and the pains associated with it.

The cave has an oblong shape, measuring approximately 60 metres in length and 9-12 metres in width. Inside, one can find the remnants of a substantial rectangular stone altar, encompassed by stalagmites resembling human figures. It is believed that pregnant women used to rub their bellies on this altar, seeking a safe and smooth childbirth.
