On 27th September 2021, a strong earthquake struck the holy church and caused a lot of damage in Arkalochori and other villages in Crete.

As the small church collapsed, a man who was working there lost his life.
The church was completely destroyed but six months later, in March 2022, the foundation was set to build a new church.

The Dioceses of Arkalochori, Kasteli and Viannos and the Ministry of Culture all came together to organise the construction of the new church. The new church was inaugurated exactly one year later, on 27th September.
