ABOUT

The hill of Prophet Elias in Arkalochori constitutes no less than an archaeological treasure.

The first excavation of a Minoan cave in Arkalochori about a century ago, unearthed not only the famous gold and bronze double axes, but also swords as well as most of the metallic archaeological finds of the Minoan Period.

The most impressive findings of all are the different layers revealed by the excavation and the morphology of the ground itself. Indeed, the hill itself is a single, enormous limestone rock. On top of this rock, there are dozens of carved floors and walls, which, as the completion of the excavation is expected to reveal, could well be hundreds. These layers slope upwards from east to west.

The excavation also unearthed many important artefacts such as, coins from various periods from ancient to modern times, pottery from all periods, and various other tools and artefacts, which the Archaeological Service will release in due time.
